But today, we are absolutely delighted to officially reveal a licensing agreement with the venerable Ministry of Defence and with the world-renown Elite Parachute Regiment, the airborne infantry regiment of the British Army.

The Birth of the Parachute Regiment: A Dive into History

The dark clouds of World War II were not just casting shadows on battlefields but were also the harbingers of change in military strategies and the conception of new elite units. Amidst this global chaos, the British Army birthed an idea that would forever change the dynamics of warfare: the formation of the Parachute Regiment.

The Need for a New Strategy

As the global conflict expanded, it became increasingly evident that conventional warfare methods were insufficient. The early stages of World War II witnessed the lightning-fast advances of enemy forces, making traditional land-based counter-offensives challenging. The British Army quickly recognised the urgent need for a force capable of swift and strategic insertions behind enemy lines. This imperative was not merely about confronting the enemy but sowing confusion, disrupting logistics, and paving the way for larger ground forces to advance.

The Advent of the 'Paras'

In response to these challenges, 1940 witnessed the birth of the Parachute Regiment, affectionately known as the 'Paras'. Their formation was not merely an act of necessity but also one of innovation. The concept of paratroopers wasn't entirely new, but the scale and strategic significance given to this regiment was unparalleled. These soldiers weren’t just meant to jump out of planes; they were to be the vanguard, the first strike, the embodiment of agility and surprise.

World War II: Proving their Mettle

The 'Paras' soon demonstrated their worth, becoming an instrumental force in multiple theatres of war. Their role in the famous Operation Market Garden is a testament to their bravery and strategic importance. While the operation didn't achieve all its objectives, the courage and resilience shown by the Parachute Regiment became legendary. Their ability to hold key positions, sometimes vastly outnumbered, earned them respect from friends and foes alike.

In North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the thick forests of Europe, the Paras were at the forefront, disrupting enemy lines, capturing key positions, and creating opportunities for larger allied forces to breach enemy defences. Their successes went beyond mere tactical achievements. The psychological impact of knowing that the Paras could appear anywhere, anytime, played a significant role in tilting the balance of the war.

More than Just Soldiers

But the Parachute Regiment was more than just a military unit; it became a symbol of adaptability, resilience, and innovation. Their rigorous training and unique role in the army fostered a deep sense of camaraderie. The maroon beret they donned wasn't just a piece of clothing; it was a badge of honour, representing sacrifice, bravery, and commitment.

As we look back on the origins and early days of the Parachute Regiment, it's clear that their formation was not just a response to the urgencies of war but a visionary move that redefined modern warfare. Their legacy, established amidst the trials of World War II, serves as a beacon of excellence, adaptability, and indomitable spirit.

Earning the Wings: No Ordinary Feat

To don the esteemed maroon beret and the coveted parachute wings is no small feat. To earn those wings, a recruit must complete a minimum of eight jumps, and the journey to those jumps is paved with determination, courage, and an indomitable spirit. The training is gruelling, both mentally and physically, testing the limits of every individual.

Each year, many hopefuls begin the rigorous training, but only a fraction make it through to the end. It's not just about the physical prowess, but the mental resilience that sets the Paras apart. Only the most dedicated, those willing to push past their boundaries, graduate from the Parachute Regiment training.

Pegasus, Bruneval and the Legacy of The Paras

An unusual yet endearing aspect of the Parachute Regiment is their Shetland pony mascots, Pegasus and Bruneval. These mascots embody the regiment's spirit and are named after two of the most significant operations in the regiment's history. Their presence serves as a reminder of the valour and sacrifices made by the regiment over the years.

Pegasus V, the 22-year-old Shetland pony, serves as The Parachute Regiment mascot. Born in 2001 and known affectionately as 'Peg' or 'Peggy', he was donated by Michelle Birks in 2011. Pegasus has a friendly temperament, showcased in his younger years as 'Blackie' at a car boot sale giving rides to kids. His early exposure to various events and fancy dress competitions contributed to his pleasant demeanor. As Jemima, Michelle's daughter, outgrew him, Pegasus was donated to the regiment, becoming a beloved mascot.

Bruneval III, another Shetland pony, is Pegasus V's companion. Born in 2006, 'Bruno' as referred to by many, has a contrasting temperament to Pegasus, often displaying shyness. Both ponies share a bond, keeping each other company during events requiring overnight stays. They have their distinct likes and dislikes; Pegasus enjoys being the alpha and craves treats, while Bruneval appreciates grooming other horses and taking in his surroundings during walks. Plans are in place for both ponies to retire together, emphasising their shared journey and close companionship within the regiment.
